The timepiece
The Rolex GMT-Master 6542 is one of the most historically important vintage Rolex sports watches. Introduced in the mid-1950s as the first GMT-Master reference, the 6542 became famous for its early transparent Bakelite bezel insert with luminous numerals, produced only for a very short period before Rolex moved to aluminium inserts. A 1956 example sits within the earliest production phase of the model.
The watch is defined by the classic 38 mm steel Oyster case, the bidirectional 24-hour bezel, the gilt dial architecture of early examples and the unmistakable red GMT hand that shaped the reference. The period movement belongs to the Rolex 1036 family, developed to give independent 24-hour indication of a second time zone.
Because surviving Bakelite inserts are fragile and often replaced, the originality and consistency of bezel, dial, hands, case and movement weigh heavily on valuation.
The watch is offered without box and without papers. On vintage references of this standing, collectors usually give more weight to originality and condition than to accessories.
