The Rolex GMT-Master 6542 is one of the most historically important and collectible vintage Rolex sports watches ever produced. Introduced in the mid-1950s as the first GMT-Master reference, the 6542 became famous for its early transparent Bakelite bezel insert with luminous numerals—a feature produced only for a short period before Rolex transitioned to aluminum inserts. A 1956 example sits within the earliest production era of the model and is particularly prized when it retains period-correct components and strong originality.
The watch is characterized by the classic 38 mm stainless-steel Oyster case, bidirectional 24-hour bezel, gilt-style dial architecture on early examples, and the distinctive red GMT hand that defined the reference. The movement used during this period was from the Rolex 1036 family, developed to provide independent 24-hour indication for a second time zone. Because surviving Bakelite inserts are fragile and frequently replaced, the originality, condition, and consistency of the bezel, dial, hands, case, and movement are critical factors in valuation.
Offered as a 1956 example without papers and without box (no garanzia / no scatola), the watch should be described transparently as an early GMT-Master 6542 with Bakelite bezel, while avoiding any claim of completeness.
